Writing Credit: The Impossibility of Artificial Intelligence

Write a 4000 word essay surveying the philosophical and pragmatic arguments that have been advanced against the notion of Artificial Intelligence. The survey must be complete, from the most esoteric reasons why AI may be impossible, through to the most practical. Many of the anti-AI arguments have been carefully answered by proponents of AI, and these answers must be discussed in your essay. Do not simple quote arguments and counter arguments - you must understand and discuss in your own words (Beware: I've read all this stuff :-).

Your essay must be word processed (or equivalent - hand written documents are for the computer illiterate). A first draft will be accepted at the lecture on 12th February. A second draft will be accepted at the lecture on 18th March. The final submission must be submitted at the lecture on 22nd April. (Remember that late submissions will generally not be accepted - see the policy in the administration document.)
