Operating Systems: Historic UNIX
"UNIX" is a generic name for many specific operating systems, including
Linux, FreeBSD, Mac OS X, SunOS, Solaris, XENIX, Mach, etc, etc.
Some of these specific variants have faded into the mists of time, but
some are now widely used.
Write a one page document about the UNIX-style operating system assigned
to you below, one of Linux, Solaris, or Mac OS X
(if your name is not listed, please tell the instructor).
Your document must take a historic view, tracing the the development of
the operating system from its roots through to its current form.
The document must have three sections (of approximately equal importance):
- Origins: What are the historic origins of the OS?
Through what forms has it passed en-route to its current form.
Who were the main people involved, and what particular influences
did each have?
- Architecture and Implementation: What is the basic software
architecture of the OS? How has it been implemented?
In what ways is it reliant on specific hardware features?
- Current status: What features of the OS make it successful?
What applications is the OS most suitable, and used, for?
Your document must be word processed (or equivalent - hand written documents
are for the computer illiterate).
It must be at most one page, single spaced, 12pt font (I'll ignore anything
after the first page, really).
You must submit it at the lecture on 14th September.
(and remember that late submissions will generally not be accepted -
see the policy in the administration document).
Your document will be graded mainly on content, but decent presentation
is also expected.
It is worth 5% of the course's assessment.
