Arts and Sciences Requirements 1996-1997

This is a synopsis of the Arts and Sciences Requirements for a student majoring in Math or in Computer Science. Read the Undergraduate Catalog carefully, and consult with an advisor for the best information concerning your admission year.
Arts and Sciences Requirements 42 Credits
English Composition:
  • ENG 106
  • Note: Most students will need to take prerequisite course ENG 105.
3 Credits
Foreign Languages
  • One 200 level or higher course in a foreign language.
  • Note 1: Most students will need to take two 100 level courses as the prerequisite.
  • Note 2: Only certain 200 level courses, i.e. SPA 243 and 253, are allowed for native Spanish speakers electing Spanish.
3 Credits
History/Social Science
  • One or two courses from: HIS 101--102, 121--122, 131--132, 161--162
  • Two or three courses, no more than two from the same department:
    • APY 201, 202
    • CCS 110
    • ECO 211, 212
    • GEG 105, 110

Humanities: One or two courses from each of the three groups:

  • Note: The school also requires a one semester computer or statistics course, which can be satisfied by MTH 220.

Natural Science: One science chosen from:
  • BIL 150/151, 160/161
  • CHM 111, 112
  • GSC 110, 111, 120, 150
  • PHY 101/106, 102/108, 201, 202
  • Note 1: The actual requirement is at least 4 credits in courses counting towards a major in BIL, CHM, GSC or PHY.
  • Note 2: PHY 101/106 and 102/108 do not count towards a Physics major but are acceptible anyway.
  • Note 3: The courses listed satisfy the requirement with a minimum of credits. The recommended sequences for a student strong in science will be CHM 111-112 or PHY 201-202 or PHY 205-206-207.
4 Credits

The student may substitute an Interdisciplinary Course for one of the require courses in Social Sciences or Humanities. The Interdisciplinary Courses substituting for Social Sciences are:

AMS 101, AAS 250, JUS 111, WOS 201. The Interdisciplinary Courses substituting for Humanities are: AMH 101, JUH 111, WOH 201.
