This is a course in assembly language programming, emphasizing the programming and architecture of the PIC 16C84 microcontroller.

Students are supplied with a PICDEM-1 demonstration board to program and experiment with the PIC 16C84. The program for the 16C84 is downloaded into the microchip by the PICSTART programmer. The PICSTART can also erase and read the PIC 16C84.

There are three PICSTART programmers. One is located in the lab, Ungar Room 426. The other two are shared among the students and can be used outside the lab, on any Windows PC.

In this course, we will:

• Learn binary number representations
• Learn basic digital electronics
• Learn basic microcontroller architecture
• Learn the PIC assembly language and architecture
• Write a simulator on PC or UNIX for the PIC.
• Do projects with the PIC
• Relate our experience with the PIC to other microprocessor assembly languages and architectures

The PIC has quite a cult following, so despite its meager statistics we are sure to find lots of fun projects.
