Homework 1
- Due: Wed, Feb 2.
-
The maximum distance between two stations on a 10Base-2 ethernet
LAN is based on the minimum packet size, the requirement that
collisions be detected during packet transmission, and the
speed of light. Do the calcuation correctly to find the
maximum distance.
-
Consider the US Mail in the light of the 7 layer OSI model.
What element of "Mail Technology" corresponds to each layer.
What are the addresses? What function do they serve
(actually, there are several different addresses, describe them all).
-
Do that same as above for the telephone system.
-
Boats can signal each other using flags. At least I read about
this in a book about this guy that sails around the world
by himself in a home built boat.
Tell me about this communcation system in terms of the
OSI model and other communications principals we have learned so far.
-
For the next two items you will need a machine with either root or
administrator access. Install ethereal, www.ethereal.com, on your
machine and capture some packets.
If you are using ethernet, is it DIX or 802.2?
If it is some other technology, what is it? Can you see the level-2
frame in ethereal?
-
What is the MAC address of your ethernet card or cards? How
to you find out this information?
